Rina Angela Penales is Little Ms. Rosary 2009

Another reason to be proud to be HCECians came along last October 18, 2009 when Rina Angela Penales, a grade 3 pupil, bagged the first place in the Search for Little Ms. Rosary 2009 sponsored by Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in line with the celebration of the Rosary Month. The search has been part of the parish's October activities which aims to heighten the level of Marian awareness among young girls.

Twelve young girls from different private and public schools in Iriga underwent the written tests in the initial phase which measured their knowledge about the facts and life about Mary, the Mother of God. The second phase gave them opportunity to express their understanding about the meaning of praying the rosary.

Rina Angela was able to synthesize her understanding zeroing to the correct answer: "We pray the rosary to know more about Jesus and Mary." (Para makilala si Jesus at Maria). These are the words that gave Rina Angela the coveted title of Little Ms. Rosary 2009.

The coronation will be on October 25, 2009 at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Credit is given to the Religion Department headed by Mdm. Christine V. Radan and to Mdm. Chrissa Igne and Shella Martinez who served as Rina's coaches.

HCECians will excel if given a fair play

The school's curriculum intends to educate pupils for life through a holistic approach. Endless lists of pupils' achievements served already as hallmarks of HCEC. High quality of pupils is the crowning glory of the school.

The product of the school's curriculum (INPUT) is the quality performance (OUTPUT) of the pupils and graduates seen as evidences in their high performance in other schools.

Whenever the school joins in any competition, preparation is also made through an after class and weekend coaching. With this, our contestants still landed on competitive ranks. HCECians have all the chances to excel if only given a fair play. It is a frustrating experience that there are times that our contestants failed to get the top award because of the lapses in the mechanics in the conduct of the contests. Efforts to contest the matter were made but to no avail due to technical rules, the said efforts were put to vain.

One of the school's 5Cs is the CHARACTER formation. The coaches instill in the minds of the pupil-contestant that what matters most in every competition is the way you did the game. It is how you played the game. It is an opportunity for the pupils to have the discipline and the opting to choose the correct values that will form their character. Remember, that the school educates the pupils for life not for contests. Joining in an inter-school competition is an effort to establish collaboration among other schools and also to gauge the pupils’ performance against the pupils' in other school (IF ONLY GIVEN A FAIR PLAY).

JAMPACKED SEM-ENDER ACTIVITIES

• UN Celebration- October 26

The Grade School will remember and celebrate the United Nations' Day on Monday, October 26, 2009 in its simplest but meaningful activities. This will feature flag making of the assigned country, Art Activity, Essay and Poem Writing Activity (not a contest, but the works will be included in the Buradol issue. Let your kids bring art papers, glue and one folder slider.) Parade of Nations will highlight the program in the afternoon. This activity aims to inform the kids the facts and important roles of the United Nations Organization in universal development. This year’s theme: Environmental Sustainability: An Important Tool in Poverty Alleviation will be the focal point of the activity.

• Campus Living Rosary-October 27

The traditional Campus Living Rosary (CLR) is set to be said on October 27, 2009 right after the morning rituals. This CLR will be participated in by grade school pupils and some volunteer- parents which will become part of the human rosary.

• HCEC Halloween: Trick Or Treat on October 28

Halloween for all but not for all

Almost all are now looking forward to the Scary Wednesday! What? A Scary Wednesday? Yup! On Wednesday, October 28 the witches, the ghosts, the elves and other creatures will party at HCEC. It’s the Grade School Halloween Party: A Trick or Treat. This is FOR ALL grade school pupils and everyone is required to attend the party as part of the sem-ender activity. The wearing of Halloween costume is NOT FOR ALL, it is only for those who are willing to be in costume. We encourage that the simplest costume will be worn so as not to give this stuff a problem to the parents. Let’s party, come in costume, but don’t forget to register.

Trick or Treat Booth by PTA Parents

Thanks to the PTA Executive Board officers headed by the President, Mr. Dindo Zoilo Ibaretta in approving the proposed involvement of the parents in the Halloween Party by providing the Trick or Treat Booth. The level parents will man the booth and will prepare the candies and goodies for the children who will visit the booth for the Trick or Treat Game. So, don't forget to let your child carry a Halloween basket for their treats of candies.

Happy Halloween . . . .

Candies for others

What will you do to a basketful of candies?

A. Eat everything in a day, anyway, they are all mine.

B. Eat some and save them for some other day. That will be my week-long supply of sugar…

C. Eat some and save for some Christmas give- away.

How will you rate yourself?

What will you do to a basketful of candies?
If you choose A, you will surely visit your doctor or dentist in the next couple of days for tonsillitis or tooth ache.

If you will choose B, you will have your visit to the clinic maybe next month.

If you will choose C, you will surely enjoy your candies, spare your tonsils and your precious teeth and you can make few children happy with your candy give-away this Christmas.

Those who can save their Halloween Treat Candies will have to bring them back to school in December for “The Give a Candy Project”.

A plan to have Shakey's Iriga as Halloween Party Host and Food Caterer

To add color to the Scary Wednesday at HCEC, Shakey's Iriga will join the HCECians in the Halloween Party: A Trick or Treat as Party Host and food caterer. They will provide the kids the fun games and exciting prizes that will complete the party. The party package cost at Php150.00 per pupil that includes the party give- away, prizes , the food- (chicken, spaghetti, pizza, mojos, garlic bread and drinks) and mascot appearance. This is a great offer which will give A WORRY-FREE PARTY both for the kids and mommies who will be preparing the merienda to be brought to school. But we want to make a survey on how many will avail of the package?

If we can get the MAJORITY of grade schoolers, we will push through with the plan of getting Shakey’s. If not, the original plan of bringing food for merienda will de done. We want everyone to enjoy the party and we don’t want that there are kids who will be left-out.

Please find the Order Slip on the last page. The slip must be returned to the class adviser ON MONDAY. If by then, we don’t get the entire pupils, we will drop- off the plan.

• BSP/GSP Camping –October 29-31

The green troops are coming, marching on their way to the camp site with vigor, strength, excitement and pride. The 11th Institutional Joint Encampment of the Boy Scout and Girl Scout is trooping its way on October 29-31, 2009. Camp site is ready, the tents and pegs are waiting to be erected, bag packs are already out to be on the site, and the scouters are in full-gear, ready to be challenged in the most sought - after activities. The rigid and vigorous line up of events excite the kids more.

Aside from the kids who can't sleep anymore by this, can't wait to have their camps are the parents, especially of those who are first - time campers. Apprehensions and worries overwhelm these parents just the thought of their kids who for the first time will sleep away from the comforts of their home and from the ever-ready assisting hands of the yayas or mothers. But don't worry, mommies and daddies, your children are no longer babies. They know and will learn more on how to spell and live with the word responsible-independency. Parents have visiting hours, so watch-out for the schedule of visiting hours.

PTA Officers to conduct blood typing

The PTA Executive Board will conduct a Blood Typing Activity among scouters during the camping as one of their projects. The blood typing is not compulsory and only for those with parents’ permission are to be given. Knowing one’s blood type is crucial in emergency cases. Pupils who will have the blood typing will be given an ID card bearing their names and blood type.

This project will be spearheaded by Mrs. Theresa Sta. Rosa, a Medical Technologist under the headship of the PTA EB President, Mr. Dindo Zoilo Ibarreta.

A beautiful prayer that mirrors our sentiments

Mdm. Terry (our School Directress) handed over to me a page of Philippine Daily Inquirer during the Morning Ritual. Wondering what is in there, I turned out the page and saw a one-page prayer from Diocese of Legazpi. Browsing through it while the morning ritual is going on, I fell in love with the prayer. It is a beautiful prayer that mirrors our sentiments as human stewards of mother earth.

As a community that adheres to the preservation of environment and humanity, the prayer will be said everyday this October and every Friday from November onwards.

ORATIO IMPERATA

AD REPELLENDAS TEMPESTATES ALIASQUE CALAMITATES

(Mandated Prayer for Deliverance from Typhoons and other Calamities)

To be prayed at every Mass right after Communion

Almighty Father, we raise our hearts to You in gratitude

for the wonders of creation of which we are part,

for Your providence that sustains us in our needs, and

for Your wisdom that guides the course of the universe.

We acknowledge our sins against You and the rest of creation.

We have not been good stewards of Nature.

We have confused Your command to subdue the earth.

The environment is made to suffer our wrongdoing,

and now we reap the harvest of our abuse and indifference.

Global warming is upon us. Typhoons, heavy rains, floods,

drought, volcanic eruption, and other natural calamities,

occur in increasing number and intensity.

We turn to you, our loving Father, and beg forgiveness for our sins.

We ask that we, our loved ones and hard-earned possessions

be spared from the threat of calamities, natural and man-made.

We beseech You to inspire us all to grow into responsible stewards of Your creation,

and generous neighbors to those in need.

We ask this, with the intercession of our Blessed Mother,

through Christ our Lord. Amen

(With Ecclesiastical Approval)

A prayer for the nation from the people of Albay, Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) and the Center for Initiatives and Research on Climate Adaptation (CIRCA). Published in PDI dated October 20, 2009.

HCEC at ABS-CBN Sagip-Kapamilya

The values of empathy and generosity are being promoted and are given prime focus in character formation at HCEC. To give the concept of these values flesh and bone, we expose the children to a concrete scenario where they can practice empathy and generosity. By providing opportunities to apply the concept will strengthen the values into the human core which will eventually become part of their value system and character.

Recently, the HCEC community conducted the Share and Save a Life Project for the victims of typhoon Ondoy. The outpouring support from the HCEC parents gave a big impact in the subconscious mind of their children. If consistently done, these children whose parents are generous and know how to empathize will surely become one like them when they grow-up.

The collected donations was so overwhelming at (Grade School) 86.75% and (Preschool) 42.68% rating of turn-outs with -

50 boxes of assorted noodles and canned goods,

2 sacks of rice,

4 boxes of clothes,

2 boxes of assorted items and

A check worth Php 5, 000.00.

With these enormous donations, the school came up with a volunteer team who went to ABS-CBN Sagip-Kapamilya-Naga last October 10, 2009 to bring the jeepload of donations and to repack the relief bags.

The HCEC Volunteer Team, headed by the Student Affairs Head, Mr. Melvin Federis, was composed of teachers and pupils. The fulfilling experience they had as they repack the relief goods inspired them to continue such kind of out-reach activity. It is still a great feeling to be of service and a channel of blessings.

The Share and Save a Life Project and the HCEC Volunteer Work are opportunities and possibilities for growth of the intellect, the heart and the will.

The ABS-CBN Regional Network Group – Naga City with Mrs. Amalia Villafuerte as the Area Head, extends its sincere thanks to the HCEC family.

Appreciation is also accorded to Mr. & Mrs. Leon & Ana Trinidad for providing the pupil-volunteers their transportation, Mrs. Judith Breboneria for lending their jeep. The volunteer team was brought by the van and the jeep together with the school van. The volunteer teem was treated to a sumptuous merienda sienna afterwards at our School Directress’ Residence.

HCEC Dance Academy Dancers on Parish Living Rosary

With the success of the Dance Academy Dancers’ presentation of the Meditative Pantomime of the Sorrowful Mysteries last October 9, 2009 during the school’s sponsorship of the Rosary-Mass, the group is invited to perform on October 23, 2009 during the Parish Living Rosary. Commendable feedbacks were given to the HCEC DADs. The members of the DADs are the pupils who attended and finished the Dance Workshop last summer.

A loving reminder to all. . .

Used Vs Loved

While a man was polishing his new car, his 4 yr old son picked up a stone and scratched lines on the side of the car. In anger, the man took the child's hand and hit it many times; not realizing he was using a wrench.

At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures. When the child saw his father.....with painful eyes he asked, 'Dad when will my fingers grow back?'

The man was so hurt and speechless; he went back to his car and kicked it a lot of times. Devastated by his own actions..... ...sitting in front of that car he looked at the scratches; the child had written: 'LOVE YOU DAD'.

The next day that man committed suicide. . .. Anger and Love have no limits; choose the latter to have a beautiful, lovely life..... Things are to be used and people are to be loved,

But the problem in today's world is that, People are used and things are loved...

Keep this in mind:

Things are to be used, but People are to be loved ...

HCEC GS - Halloween on October 28

Be among the creepiest, the scariest and the most uncanny creature in the face of the earth this October 28, 2009 at HCEC ground during the HCEC GS – Halloween: A Trick or Treat Party. Grade school pupils are invited to come in their costume and be the main attraction in the party. Pupils who wish to be in costume may fill-up a form found in this issue and submit to the class adviser on or before October 23, 2009. This is not compulsory and only for those who are willing to be in costume. But all grade school pupils are required to attend in their civilian dress. As an incentive to those who will join, ONE ARA POINT will be given to them.

Party will start at 3:00 PM onwards. Pupils are requested to bring food for their merienda sienna to be shared to their classmates.

Halloween Party is a western practice. Why we do it in HCEC? To let our children experience this kind of culture. Stories about Halloween are read in the books, but it will be more meaningful and more exciting if they will experience the party by themselves.

GS Perfect Attendance Rating at 31%

Two of the five mandatory work habits being promoted among the grade school pupils and teachers are the Attendance and Punctuality which are essentials in productivity and excellence. The school’s drive to promote the importance of attendance and punctuality in the efficiency and productivity of academic tasks remains to be a big challenge. For this year, the average attendance rating for the First Term is 97.82% , a -.36% compared to last year’s rating; punctuality rataing posed an increase of .09% giving the grade school a stunning 98.28%.

The average of the two Mandatory Work Habits for the first term is 98.05% that established a decrease of .14% compared last year.

The decrease in rating is attributed to health problems we had due to seasonal flu which is unavoidable and inevitable. In spite of this, the conscious effort of both the pupils and the parents in terms of punctuality yielded a positive result.
Actions repeatedly done will become a habit and eventually, will be a way of life.

The school recognizes the 31% of pupils who had a perfect attendance with zero tardy record through the PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD

Congratulations to the Perfect Attendance Awardees for the First Term. Continue meeting your goals and target towards excellence.

Laudable performance for the First wave of the Open Mic Season 2

An overwhelming response from the pupils was seen in the long queue of the aspirant Open Mic presenter. A big number of pupils presented themselves for screening for the Open Mic Season for the 2nd Term. This only shows that HCECians have the talents and the confidence to perform.
High Five to the first Open Mic Presenter:

Rina Angela Penales – 3 Charity

Alexis Corporal – 2 Piety

These two eloquent pupils were also the first to perform last year (refer to Vol.3 PB no.13).

Rina Angela had a Story Telling about the Wisdom of King Solomon while Alexis gave an oration piece by Abraham Lincoln. The performance was well-executed and expressed with powerful delivery.

Open Mic is for all. Screening is still on going.

First Term Exam Mean: 87%, +2% compared last year

The hardwork and perseverance of the TEAM Grade School brought in an acceptable mean rating of 87%, a +2% compared of last year’s exam mean of 85% and a performance level of 78%, a decrease of 2% compared last year’s PL of 80%.

Term exam has a weighted percentage of 30% in the term grade. This year’s term exam focused more on questions that require understanding, critical thinking, applying, analyzing, evaluating, problem solving, and creating. It is still good to recall and remember (memorize) the concepts and data, but for better and enduring learning, the skills mentioned should be mastered by the learners. Grade school learners should be exposed to this kind of questioning so as to prepare themselves for bigger challenges in secondary and tertiary levels. In this case, 78% of our Grade School learners successfully hurdled the written test.

High five to the grade school pupils! Your hardwork paid much this time. Aim more this term.

Understand Better the HCEC Curriculum
Curriculum is the totality of what is being given to the learners in school. These are the written and unwritten course of studies designed to fit in the vision-mission of the school.

The written course of study which is the Subject Matter Budget of HCEC is a product of research and benchmarking to national and international educational standards. The lessons given to the HCEC learners are not the entire things found in a particular text book. There is no text book that will supply all the needed topics and skills required set by the standards the school is setting.

HCEC does not settle with what the minimum learning competencies set by the Department of Education (Take a look at this. In public schools, Science starts in grade 3, in HCEC, Science starts in Preschool.) The school owes it to the studentry to offer more for the belief that learners can achieve more if given more.

Don’t be surprised or sometimes upset if you find the lessons in the PIK not in your child’s text books. Research, research, research will help your child become better learner and eventually a competent individual.

HCEC has proven its worth for years: High acceptance rating in Ateneo de Naga, scholarship grants for our top students, yearly admission to Philippine Science High School, commendable performance in secondary schools and in tertiary school, and acceptable rating in Standard Based Assessment.

Total School Ban of Electronic Gadgets and other Toys

Starting on September 14, 2009, electronic toy gadgets in any form will be banned in school. This mandate is caused by alarming reports of teachers on pupils who are spending their spare time playing with PSP, MSP, and other electronic toy gadgets. In school, children are encouraged to use their time productively. Break times are lessened so as to regulate the use of time in school and to direct the energies and stamina into activities that will give them better output. Considering the harmful effects of these gadgets in the mental development of children, the school has the moral responsibility over the children to teach the correct values and practices.

Pupils are encouraged to use their time productively through:
1. reading books
2. working on their BTAs and assignments
3. creative chatting- a kind of brain storming or sharing of ideas on specific topic
group study
4. playing restful games like scrabble, etc.

Bringing these gadgets in school is posing dangers to the owners in case of loses and temptations to those who do not have such gadgets.

We respect the parents’ decision to provide this kind of toys to their kids but let us reserve the use of this at home.

Self-Discipline and Parents’ Support will make us successful in this campaign.

Who and what to memorize?

Don’t be overwhelmed with the seemingly endless literary pieces to be memorized by the children. Yes, there are quite a number of them BUT only those WHO CAN DO IT are included in the elimination. The declamation piece assigned to each level is part of the recitation in English; if delivery during recitation passed the set standard and within what we call performance level, the pupil (s) will be included in the elimination round.

We also have the MYTHICAL WORLD OF MT. OLYMPUS where pupils are invited to go on audition with their memorized famous lines of the character of the gods/ goddesses of their choice, but this is not compulsory, this is voluntary in nature and those WHO CAN may join.

Memorization is a skill easily mastered at an early stage. Young brains are absorbent and have the capacity to recall and memorize the info given. Don’t get upset if there are so many things to be memorized, instead, take it as a challenge to your child. Memory and recall skills can enhance brain development.

September is Literacy Month

September is the month that accentuates the importance of mounting the skills in reading and writing which are the components of literacy. This is the time that we put into pupils’ awareness the essence of literary appreciation. The literary anthology whether local or foreign displays its richness that entices and fascinates the heart and spirit of anyone who will endulge into these works of arts.

This month, HCECians will be subjected to different exciting literary experiences that will sharpen and test their wit and skills in reading and writing.

Celebrate Words beyond Worlds

Though actions speak louder than words, thoughts and feelings are better expressed thru words. Words are essential and are the backbone of communication. Whatever media you prefer to choose, spoken or written, words are used.

Words are powerful! They can create or destroy even the strongest dynasty or kingdom. They can give blessings or curse; happiness or its opposite; love or indifference. Thru words, we can understand our past, live the present and prepare for the future. Words are parts and ways of life. With the kind of words we are using, our intellect is measured, our personality is tested. If properly and creatively used, words can create worlds- a world that has a defined culture, a world that is unique, a world that can be a legacy to the next generation.

HCEC celebrates the Literacy Month with this theme to acknowledge the contributions of the literary pieces in the enrichment of the mind and spirit through reading, listening, spreaking and writing.

What you will be excited about here is the chance to see on stage the Greek gods and goddesses personified by the pupils.

Topping all of these will be the Spelling Bee, Guess the word, that’s the word game, Essay writing contest and among others.

The Literacy Month promotes awareness of the different genre and media in communication which will enable the school children to use their creative minds in expressing their thoughts, feelings and insights through a cultured, well-mannered form of words.

Open Mic,Year 2: Open to all

Last year, Open Mic was introduced to the grade school division that gained a popular support. It is a venue for the grade school pupils to show their skills in speaking and love for literature. Every morning of Tuesday and Thursday, there will be pupils who will be reciting their favorite and well-mastered literary piece, whether it is a poem, an oration, or a declamation piece. Wednesday is reserved for the teachers. Open Mic will be per term where pupils who will join will get a FIVE ARA Points per term. This 2nd term, Open Mic will be for the recitation and creative reading of poem and stories.

For those who are interested to join the Open Mic, they must register for screening with Sir Melvin or through their English Teacher. There will be a screening to come up with the best story reader, poet or orator.

Pupils who will be for screening must bring a copy of their literary piece and must be ready to deliver it in front of the screening panel.

Screening will start on September 7, 2009 at 4:00-5:00 PM at the cafeteria.

Good Luck to HCECians for the SM’s Search for the Little Star

Ten (10) of our pupils (1 from preschool division and 9 from grade school division, will be joining the Search for the Little Star sponsored by the SM Super Stores. The search is for all boys and girls who are 4-7 years old, pretty/ handsome, confident and talented.

There was no formal screening held at HCEC but the invitation was open to all pupils. No ARA points will be given for those who will be joining the screening since the search is not academic- related.
2nd Performance Task Assessment on Sept. 22-23

The 2nd PTA is now on its way for the grade schoolers to execute a task that will show their level of competence of a particular academic skill. This non-traditional assessment elicit an authentic evidences of learning that is an indicator of enduring learning.
Please secure the Pink Form as test permit not later than Sept. 18. No processing of test permit will be done during the assessment period.

Second Term: A new phase to face

The ten weeks of the first term gave us a very challenging task to hurdle. It was a great leap from the vast stereotyped activities caused by the two-month vacation, an immense soaring from the traditional beliefs and practices in academic processes of the new ( and even old) pupils and parents), an enormous effort to establish routines on discipline and mind setting. All of these were confronted by the teachers with uncompromising conviction to carry-out their tasks. Learning experiences served their purpose and some points of improvements were noted down to improve the systems and procedures.

This week is the start of another term, the second term, which is far more challenging for it’s heading towards a more difficult lessons, more complicated concepts, more cerebral activities that will train and develop our pupils’ intellect.
The pupils will be laid open to possibilities for the development of not only the intellect but also the enhancement and refinement of the heart and the will. As the school activities pose an opportunity to learn, they also educate the heart and the will--- the spirit and the moral fibers that define the personhood of the individual.

Second term is another cosmic responsibities, a new phase, that TEAM HCEC will face.
The school firmly holds on to its principle that education is not static and unchanging. It is progressive, developing and advancing. New educational trends need to be practiced in order to make our pupils far along which will make them more competitive and acceptable to the standards set by the academe. There are tried and tested teaching strategies and pedagogical techniques but we also need to look into innovative and fresh systems.

This second term, HCEC re-commits to the core of its vocation-the pupils, to carry-out the expected processes and systems to bring forth the welfare of the HCECians. TEAM HCEC is a self-regulated entity that establishes a mechanism that evaluates, checks and corrects its systems, policies and procedures being implemented.

2nd Term PIK out this week

The 2nd Term Parents’ Involvement Kit is now on hand. The lessons to be covered for the second term are all indicated together with the references pertinent to the topic.

Have you ever asked why these pages that contain the lessons for the term is called Parents’ Involvement Kit? Why not just a plain,” List of Topics” or maybe “ Syllabus” or “Course Outline”. These pages of lessons are called PIK mainly because it intends to encourage parents’ participation and involvement in the studies of their children. How does it happen?

1. Parents may assist their children in practicing the skills of scanning and skimming through the pages of their books, finding where the topics are written (scanning & skimming are learning skills that are being taught in English-Reading Class);

2. Parents, together with their children (a must), can do the research on the suggested references;

3. Parents with their children can outline the concepts from the book based from the nomenclature of the topics.

There are still a lot more ways to make the HCEC-PIK more beneficial to both pupils and teachers. Convenience is not really a consideration here. The use of PIK is part of the learning process the school wants to instill among our pupils. HCEC-PIK is patterned in the college syllabi where pages of the book are not specifically indicated, only the references and the expected output are included. Come the time that our grade schoolers are in high school or college they are already familiar and skilled in the use of the syllabi, course outline, etc. Maybe for some parents, the HCEC-PIK doesn’t serve them well, but the school believes on its benefits and usefulness to MOST of the pupils and parents as per informal survey and evaluation.

The school appreciates and looks into some suggestions forwarded but the base of the decision to be made is the rationale behind the creation of such program, policy or practices.

If there will come a time that the HCEC-PIK deems to be not beneficial anymore, the school itself shall be the one to discontinue its issuance. For the mean time, let us all benefit from this. Appreciate its beauty, it is only in HCEC that you can find a PIK for grade school in Rinconada or in the Region. (Big schools in Metro Manila have their own version of the PIK where we benchmarked this practice.)

• Si titser- maghapong nakatayo, matiyagang nagtuturo sa mga bata na kanyang inaasahang magiging pag-asa ng bayan;

• Si Mang Oca- ang magsasaka na nagtatanim ng palay para sa pagkain ng bayan;

• Si Dok at si Nars- mga manggagamot ng baryo na tumatawid ng bundok at ilog makpaghatid lamang ng kanilang serbisyo;

Ikaw? Pwede ka bang maging bayani? Paano?

A Week-end Treat on Contemporary Dance

One once-in-a life-time opportunity that was brought to Iriguenos was the chance to watch the Dance Concert by the Power Dance Company of Mr. Douglas Nierras, the famous international choreographer. The dance genre that was brought to the awareness and consciousness of the Iriguenos was far different from the dance genre we are exposed to thru media which is more on the entrertainment side. The Dance Concert held last August 22 & 23 at the Iriga Convention Hall gave a new dimension to dancing. It is called by Mr. Nierras “Contemporary Dance”.

A dance that speaks and expresses a message. A dance that mirrors the sentiments of the people in a particular culture. It does not have a dance literature that should be followed and interpreted. It is a creative dance, a product of imagination, sensitivity and understanding of a certain issue or a practice or a belief that the culture is felt and seen. When you watch this kind of dance, you might be dissapointed if you expect dances that goes with the music. This kind of dance is not dependent on the music itself, it does not interpret the music, but the movement itself depicts and emulate what life is all about. The music here is secondary, it only adds the drama and play. I call it a cerebral exercise, intelligent watching I may say, for you need to understand the meaning of every movement, of every step. I also call it baile de corazon, for it is a dance that expresses what is in the heart.

I had the chance to watch the group not only once, not twice but thrice. The show was not glazed with loud and familiar hip-hop song or ballroom music but the feeling of excitement and enticement to every segment was consistent. You won’t get bored with almost 3- hour show- all dances and movement, you always ask for more. The 6 Pm mass last Sunday, August 23 was given a new element. There were prayer dances done in some important part of the mass. The Power Dance Company holds this prayer dance or the Panalangin Dance Concert in some churches in Europe and America to encourage more catholic devotees to renew their vows and beliefs in the catholic doctrines. A magnificent dance drama on how Jesus suffered during His passion and death was creatively shown though dance and intricate body movement. That was a great privilege given to the Iriguenos for FREE.
It was indeed a great show for Iriguenos. I just hope that all HCECians were able to watch it, for it was really an opportunity for the growth of the intellect, the heart and the will.
Special Children of Iriga as beneficiaries

The money paid for the dance concert ticket will all go to the construction of the building for the special children of Iriga City who are attending their school in a not-so complete classroom.
It was through the initiative of the Honorable Madelaine Alfelor- Gazmen with the help of Mr, Douglas Nierras, the choreographer-founder of the Power Dance Company, that the project to construct the dream of the Special Education Teachers to build the school for the children who need special learning assistance made to realize, at least to start-up the project. According to Mayor Gazmen, it is high time to get involved and realize that it is not only the responsibility of the local government unit to provide the faculties needed by the people. All of us have this social responsibility to be aware and get involved in making life a little better for others.

It was also an effort not only to provide the roof that will shelter these children, but also an opportunity to change the way people see and treat these children. Awareness that they are also part of the society that can make things possible for them if given the help and assistance needed. They are special in the eyes of God, for they have the pure intentions and untainted motives in lives. The Php50.00 or the Php500.00 for the ticket you paid will go a long-long way that will surely help these kids have a better life today and in the future. Thank you to all HCECians- pupils, parents and teachers who took time to get involved.

Congratulations to Sir Jerickson and Sir Arjay; Iriga as the Center for Artistry

Our very own Sir Jerickson Getizo and Sir Arjay Dimanarig made up to the final day of the eight-day Douglas Nierras Dance Clinic. Congratulations to our HCEC Dance Mentors for hurdling the difficult and challenging time during the dance workshop. Being trained by Mr. Nierras was an immense learning experience. Finishing the eight-day clinic made our two thespians better performers and new mentors with renewed perspective in life. Bravo to the two! You made us, HCECians proud and honored!

The dance clinic was conceptualized and planned by the City Mayor to train the city’s local dancers and choreographers, to bring them to a higher level of creativity that responds to the call of globalization. The city is finding its own niche and identity that will become the hallmark of every Iriguenos, that will serve as legacy to the next generation. Informally, the Mayor declared that Iriga is the Center for Artistry in the Bicol Region. Iriga has the best majorettes, internationally renowned singers, par-excellence street dancers, high caliber choreographers, brilliant writers, etc. that contributed to the cultural development of the city. The creative fiber and nature of the Iriguenos must be honed, developed and zoomed its potentials. With this, Iriguenos should not settle for less, aim to be better if not yet the best.

In HCEC, we started the mind-setting in doing things at its best long-long way before. HCECians always go for quality and excellence in every thing we do. Our motto: Ite ad excelentia, go for excellence.

First Term Exam: A Test of Enduring Learning and Understanding

In every pupil’s life, one of the major accountabilities is the major exam. But things should not be taken hardly but seriously for the pupils to get the target goal : TO PASS the exam and with extra effort, TO BE in the bracket of achievers.
Why are the pupils being submitted to this kind of undertaking? What are the reasons for testing? Think about these reasons.
1. Testing or evaluation is a tool to measure the pupils’ level of learning and proficiency on the competencies expected to be mastered for a certain period of time.
2. It is given to gauge teachers’ success rate in the teaching process.
3. It is used to gather data that will be the bases for the institutional evaluation.
4. The data that will be gathered will help the school, the teachers and the parents in determining the program the pupils need. Do they need intervention? Enrichment? Or advance program?
5. The output (test result) will be the evidence of enduring learning and understanding which is the end in mind in every teaching and learning process.
The success or failure of a child in taking the test is interpreted by a defined rubric.

90-100
Highly Proficient
80-89
Proficient

70-79
Progressing toward Standards
Did not meet the standard

50-69
Needs Improvement
We don’t test the pupils just for their grades. There are more reasons than the grade itself. We don’t test the pupils for the honors. If ever the pupil meets the achievers’ bracket, this is a bonus. We don’t test the children just to see the best and the worst in the class. Testing should not be a threatening event, this must be seen as a challenge to take to have a concrete proof of the pupils’ achievement compared with the standard and expected competencies and skills.
Test results are mirrors of the pupils’ and teachers’ success or failure in the teaching-learning process and the image that descibes pupils’ understanding and learning. Let’s help our kids face this challenge with the right perspective and reasons. If we will be successful in giving the correct frame of mind for testing, we can assure that the future challenges will be hurdled with victory. Just tell your kids, “Believe in yourself, give your best and stay focus.”
For grade 1 mommies

You might be overwhelmed with the bulk of lessons to be covered, but worry not, as long as your kids gave their presence and active participation in the class instructions, they will be able to surpass this new tasks for them. They will be assisted by the proctors that will ensure a pupil-friendly testing atmosphere.

2. Several pencils or pens

Home School Connection
What to study?
This weekend will surely be devoted for review of lessons in preparation for the 1st term exam. The pupils (most of the times the parents too) are anxious on how they will do the review. What to review is a big question. With so many lessons found in the Parents Involvement Kit ( PIK), what should be prioritized? Let me share to you some insights that can be helpful in dealing with this.
· Remember that lessons were already taught to the pupils; generally, pupils are expected to have the mastery of the skills and lessons;
· Review means to reread, to go back to what has been taught, so we should no longer teach the facts learned already;
· Understanding the concepts is better than memorizing all the facts;
· Test items are done with Table of Specifications to ensure that all lessons, skills and competencies will be covered, thus, there will only be few test items to be given for every lessons or topics. Most of the time, the questions being given are for those facts , information, and skills that are enduring, vital and relevant.
· 75% of the questions given during the major term exam are those that will test the higher order thinking skills which are the application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Simple recall and comprehension questions like identification, definition of terms & enumeration only comprise the 25% of the whole test items;
· Prepare an outline of the concepts so as the child will not be overwhelmed with the bulk of info. Making an outline will help the child build in his mind a clear and concise picture of the concepts.
· Extra readings of information about the lessons is not appropriate at this time for this should be done before the review week/days. New facts may just confuse the child. Remember, s/he must be reviewing (view again) the lessons taught.
· Give time on spellings, drills on Math skills, sentence constructions and important facts and info.
· Aim for understanding that will endure rather than recalling because memory fails.
Make your child's review sessions an enjoyable and fruitful one. Be it a bonding time for both of you, instead of giving you tears and blues. Have a happy weekend review days. (First published in Vol 2, PB no. 19,dated Oct. 12, 2007)
August 17- Monday, last day to claim the Pink Form

Pink Form that serves as the exam permit should be claimed from the Accounting Office not later than August 17, 2008. There will be no releasing of pink form during the first day of the exam. All those who will pay on Tuesday can take the test the next day. Exams starts at 7:45AM and late pupils will not be allowed to take the test. Let’s give our children a “worry-free” testing days. Coming to school on a testing day with no test permit will give them so much stress. The glucose that is intended for cognitive activities are consumed when children are under stress. The Pink Form of those who will pay on Tuesday will be endorsed to teachers. Pupils will take the test the next day. For those who will have “special arrangements” are advised to transact their concerns earlier with the Accounting Office.

Bigyang Pugay: Ang Ating Wika

Bigyang Parangal: Ang Mga Pilipino

Nutri-Eco Culminating Program staged finally

Outdoor activities are dependent on good weather, unluckily; the set Nutri-Eco Culminating Program last Friday was cancelled because of the bad weather. This Friday, the most awaited program was finally seen. Bravo and cheers to the Organizing committee headed by Mdm. cEcil Sadang, to the Grade school teachers and to sir Melvin Federis, the Head of Student Affairs for beeing in the steering wheel of the July activities.

Learning Holiday on August 17

To give the pupils enough time to prepare themselves for the exams, Learning Holiday is given to the Grade School pupils. Learning Holiday is usually the day before the major exam. This August 17, classes is off in the afternoon. During this day, teachers conduct review sessions, drills, exercises and last minute instructions. Periods are shortened to accommodate all subjects.

Policies on Special Exams

In case a pupil will not be able to take the examination on the scheduled dates, she should take the special exam dates one week after the scheduled exam or as per discretion of the principal in case of sickness or hospitalization.
Procedure in getting the Special Exam Permit. Parents/ guardians shall accomplish a Special Exam Request Form at the Registrar's Office. Submit the Special Exam Request Form with the excuse letter/ Medical Certificate as attachments to the Office of the Principal for approval and scheduling. Pay the Special Exam fee of Php 50.00 per subject to the Cashier's Office if absence is NOT a medical reason. Secure the Pink Form and the Special Exam Permit which will be presented during the exam. Be informed that the teachers shall prepare a separate and different test questions for the Special Exam. Failure to take the test on the special schedule will mean a failing grade for the term exam. Strictly no processing of test permit during the exam days. Last year’s cooperation and adherence to school policies of the HCEC parents resulted in a hassle, worry-free exam days. Test Permits were processed, released and submitted to the class advisers days before the exam days. This term exam, the school expects that there will be no long queue at the accounting office on the first day to pay the bills and claim the test permits. This practice does not help the pupils to have the correct mind set for the exam. They are put under stress and the energy supposed to be spent for cognitive activities are consumed in that stressful time of lining-up. This mind condition will surely affect the pupil's performance during the exam.

The Pink Form which serves as the Test permit should be claimed days before the term exam and not on the day of the exam. For special cases, prior arrangements can be made with the Accounting office days before the exam.
The school is once again asking for the cooperation of the parents and guardians regarding this matter. Let's provide our kids worry-free exam days. Pay your school bills early.

Nutri-Eco Month reminds the kids on two fundamental things in life

Have you thought about having a waning planet earth visibly seen and felt by climate change? How about having flourishing malnutrition state of our children due to the booming business of fastfood chains, junk food decoyed as foods fortified with vitamins, non-nutritious food choices and life style? What will be the face of our next generation?

July is the month which is specifically used to remind our school children and parents the importance of good nutrition and well-taken cared environment. School activities related to the celebration are aiming to increase and heightenth children’s awareness on two fundamental things in life: Their HEALTH and their ENVIRONMENT. Almost everything that we do are linked, connected and interrelated to these.

“Maayos na Kapaligiran Tungo sa Magandang Kalusugan”, the school theme for July’s Nutri-Eco Celebration, conveys a very clear and obvious message. In HCEC, children go through the different academic related activities that enliven their awareness. This is part of the values formation that the school is actively into. Activities like these are not only for the celebration per se, but most importantly in the inculcating of positive values on healthy and environmental friendly practices.

We have the powers to shape the face of the next generation! Let’s take care of our children. Make them healthy physically, mentally and spiritually with a clean and unpolluted environment. Congratulations to the contest winners this July. Special appreciation to the Fusion Club Chief Moderator, Mdm. Cecil Sadang for spearheading the different activities, in coordination with the Flora & Fauna Chief Mentor, Mr. Dominic Bagacina. This is under the supervision of the Office of the Student Affairs, with Mr. Melvin C. Federis as the Coordinator. Cheers are for the TEAM Grade School Teachers for their collaborative efforts and commitment especially in the success of the Sabay-Sabay sa Paggalaw, Mass Demonstration.

Parents likewise are reminded here to have an active commitment in providing their kids the best nutrition they can give. Healthy foods need not be expensive. Environmental issues can be a home-based discussion among siblings and parents.

First Friday Mass on August 7

Part of the school’s institutional practices is the holding the First Friday Mass. This is to inculcate the spiritual values among our pupils. This First Friday Mass will be held on August 7, 2009 at 8:00 am to be sponsored by the Grade 1 class. Parents are invited to attend.

Mr. Jumar Penaflor and his Team to relinquish their post

Three years of highly commendable performance in the service as Executive Board Officers are the great contributions of Mr. Jomar Penaflor and his TEAM to the PTA general membership and to the school. The HCEC community is the living witness of the laudable accomplishments of the Executive Board. The erection of the HCEC Pavilion, which is credited to this Team, conducting several fund-raising drives that yielded additional funds for the association are just the few things they contributed to the school. Mr. Jumar Penaflor, as the EB President, together with the rest of the EB Officers were able to synergize the HCEC parents to have one focus and direction in the accomplishment of the school’s vision-mission. Endless appreciation is given to them as they will relinquish their post to the next set of EB Officers headed by MR. DINDO IBARRETA, as the new EB President.
The turn-over ceremony will be held on August 7, 2009 right after the First Friday mass at 8:00am at HCEC Main Campus. Part of the ceremony is the Special Recognition Rights to be given to the out-going officers by the HCEC Management.
As we bid goodbye and say our thanks to Mr. Penaflor, we are opening our doors, giving our support to Mr. Ibarreta, welcoming him to the partnership that thrives through a loving and caring atmosphere, all for one main reason: the school children of HCEC.
All PTA-Executive Officers (out-going and present) and the Homeroom Presidents are invited to the Turn-over Ceremony. Attendance in the First Friday Mass is not compulsory but it is encouraged.

Oath of Commitment of the Pupil-Leaders to be spoken publicly

After the successful Leadership Training Seminar Workshop attended by our intermediate Pupil-Leaders, they will publicly profess their Oath of Commitment to HCEC. This will be joined by the Primary Pupil-Leaders on August 7, 2009 after the first Friday Mass. In the ceremony, the Action Plans made by the pupils to meet their goals and target KRAs will be presented to HCEC community.
“HCEC LIDER. . . at your service po!”will be their dictum as they carry-out their roles and responsibilites.

First Term Exam set in two- week time

The First Term Exam is set on August 18-20, 2009. A tough call: Home-School values formation

Children need to have an environment that will nourish and enrich their total human consciousness. The being and becoming of children lies on the hands of the significant adults in their lives. The parents and the teachers are among these important people in child’s life. The environment that we provide them will shape their soul and spirit, that will build their moral fiber and that will complete their total persona. The environment where children thrive is considered to be a product of the physical, psychological as well as social atmosphere created by the interactions between the children and their significant adults and among themselves also.
From this perspective, it is essential that the significant adults must provide and set-up situations and conditions conducive both to learning and discovering. It is then a great challenge both to teachers and parents to provide such environment to their children. A challenge that needs to be faced squarely. The teachers and the parents must have a congruent values and beliefs to achieve consistency that will result to formation.
Behavior is learned through consistent values formation caught in the child’s environment. The home and the school are the two milieus where children live and grow. The home being the first environment that awakens child’s being is and must be the source of positive values formation. It is the home and the family that should initiate the learning of the basic positive values like spirituality, respect, honesty, kindness, etc.
From home, the school reinforces the values being practiced by the child. The school shapes it into a more structured aura. In school, the behavior caused by the values is being honed, enriched and becoming fully alive.
school doesn’t have the sole and lone source of learning, especially the learning that comes from the inner core of a person. It is the home, the family that is essential in forming the heart and soul of a child. Both the home and the school need to respond to this tough call of values formation among our children. The quality of our response shall determine the quality of values and behavior our children will manifest in their lives now and in the future.
Think about this . . .
Watch our thoughts. . .
For it will be our words . . .
That will be our deeds . . .
That will be our habits . . .
That will be our character . .
That will be our values. . .
That will become our destiny.
In one accord, let us teach our children the values that will lead them to their destiny. Let’s return this gift, more than beautiful if not the most as it was created, to our Creator, our almighty.
BUT. . .
Where do our children learn these?
· saying bad words
· hitting
· disrespect
· dishonesty
· loose morals
· laziness
· retaliating
· violence
· etc
No parents, no teachers will teach these, but where did our children get these values?????
Check our environment . . . PLEASE
HCEC on Holistic and Enduring Learning

“Music and movement, jingle and song making, speech classes, art works, games and sports, academic contests, out-bound studies, research works done in or out of the classrooms are some of the things you can see and observe in HCEC aside from their regular academic classroom tasks HCECians are busy with the pertinent things related to the development of their left and right brain functions.
School is a distinct place where children’s holistic persona is formed, developed and enhanced. What the school offers and provides are the things the children will acquire. The kind of academic and non-academic programs and the entire things that a child experiences in school comprise the curriculum.
In HCEC, the curriculum is carefully well-planned and designed using a scientific and well-tested approach in curriculum design (Power Standard and Understanding by Design) backed up with the theories, philosophy and principles of Multiple Intelligence Theory, Learning Styles, Brain Based Theory, Progressivism and Essentialism.
Pupils are exposed to multiple educational and academic activities in and out of the classrooms that help the maximum cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills development.
Academic tasks are not the only object of education. School life is not only about books. There are essential things in life that are not learned from books and within the four walls of the classrooms. School life must have a little bit of this, a little bit of that. In other words, it must be a balance of academic works and non-academic works like the extra-curricular activities where pupils can discover and develop their interests and talents.
In HCEC, we offer this kind of balanced school life to our children. The Academic Related Activities (ARA) is the special arena for our HCECians to cultivate and nurture their innate talents, aptitude and intelligences.
Set activities are planned with all the pupils in mind and not the only few. The school believes that all pupils are gifted (Multiple Intelligence Theory by Gardner) and have the capabilities to excel in their own fields and at their own phase.
To meet this goal, an elimination round is given to all pupils as part of their regular academic performance. Each pupil is given a fair chance to show-off their abilities in a particular task. Those who will shine from among all pupils will be chosen to be the class representatives for the said activities that will compete or perform for the inter-school program. [The process of elimination for every activity has been a policy since AY 2006-2007]
Pupil’s participation in a competition or program does not lie on the subjective disposition of the teacher. It is the pupil himself who will give the mandate whether he/she will be included in the set activity. As long as the pupils have the talents, abilities and aptitude, they will bloom in their own appropriate time. From tiny tots to grown up kids, pupils will blossom according to their inherent capabilities. The school provides the avenues and opportunities that will stimulate the brain and challenge the mind and body to perform at its peak.
Congratulations to the MTAP qualifiers

The Math Department conducted the final screening for the school’s contestants for the MTAP. They will undergo the Math Skills Training Program (MSTP) under the HCEC-Math Circle and will be given special coaching to prepare them intellectually and psychologically. Literary artists to shine; character to glow

The second leg of the Nutri-Eco Celebration is for the pupils with skills and talents in literary writings. The Primary pupils had the Poem/Slogan Making, while the Intermediate had the essay writing on the theme: Maayos na Kapaligiran tungo sa Magandang Kalusugan. Last week’s activity was for those with Spatial Intelligence or for those with visual art talents. Winners to these contests will be posted and announced next week.

In HCEC, pupils are given the learning environment that will discover, develop and sharpen their potentials. As the pupils undergo the process of learning, it is not only the intellect that is being nourished, the character and values as well are touched and influenced by the activities. Self-discipline, cooperation, commitment to finish one’s tasks, and honesty are just among the few which are being learned and acquired by our pupils. With the school’s activities, the intellect, the will and the character are educated,
